THE ART OF MERCHANDISE

HEY APATHY! Pen Drawings "The Art of Merchandise Exhibition!" Superheroes, commuters, cars and mechanized creatures run rampant amidst personified skyscrapers and a monstrous metropolis. The screaming buildings spiral as an ominous gear but it is up to all the strange denizens to make this city spin. The streets are over run by robotic assimilation yet man continues to act as animal despite all technological innovations! Witness the strange metamorphoses, deranged traffic anomalies and multi-dimensional characterizations of the “HEY APATHY!” universe.

This exhibition showcased an extensive collection of unique and limited edition merchandise featuring artwork and products from 2005- 2011. Thematically the show explores the struggles between man, machine, progress and alienation in the urban setting. Compiled entirely of reproductions the exhibition challenges preconceived notions regarding of fine art as well as the standards of commercial practices. Should art be an elitist hobby accessible only to a privileged sect? Does mass merchandising have to be detrimental to both the environment and our psychology?

This show included numerous giclee prints, fashion designs, and autographed graphic novels.  The installation focuses on the merchandising aspect of the works presenting a variety of accessible creations displayed in a manner usually reserved for fine art. The Comic books and prints were all framed and hung retaining the experience of viewing gallery artworks satirizing both art and popular culture.

One of the primary goals of the “HEY APATHY!” project is to create works that are both intellectually provocative as well as accessible to viewers of all ages. By using of street art performances, animations, video game installations and accessible merchandising, conceptual philosophies generally reserved for the gallery setting can reach, affect and be affected by the outside world. With images ranging from small rapid gestures all the way up to extended month long studies, “The Art of Merchandising” exhibit presents an bold attempt at subverting both the mainstream and counter cultures.
