HEY APATHY! Sonic Experimentations.
It's fun to play psychedelic music! Almost five years ago I re-connected with my high school band mate and starting participating in semi-weekly free form jam sessions. Though unpracticed and primarily a social gathering, often involving a rotating cast of anywhere between 5 and 15 people and varied levels of alcoholic intake, a fated and unique occurrence sort of forced us to pull things together. An opportunity to retain finances for the development of the HEY APATHY! animated artworks arose, all I needed was a soundtrack for the cartoon demos. Amazingly a bunch of us pulled together and got the music done. Well one thing led to another and the large drop-in sessions started getting smaller, tighter, sober and more frequent. We've performed live at Toronto's Nuit Blanche Festival in 2008-09 and at the Resistor Gallery during a giant HEY APATHY! gala exhibition. As of Jan 2011 there are seven members of the group who practice regularly. As an artist who usually works in recluse, the group experimentation has proven unbelievably inspiring. Somehow, though we never talk about the music, we seem to be synchronizing in a manner than often sounds planned. I am constantly amazed at the telepathic communications and have actually discovered new hope in co-operation by way of these improve jam sessions. The experience has been extremely rewarding (even though I still can’t play my instruments) and we’ve managed to score a few minutes of psychedelic music for my weird animations. On this page I’ll be posting any good recordings and stories about the sounds that we make as the strange group evolves.
