LIVE LARGE SCALE STREET PERFORMANCES

THE CITY OF GEARS COMES ALIVE IN THESE MONSTER COMIC MURALS! The battles between good and evil, nature and technology, and man vs. man rages on in the streets of the monstrous metropolis. The city spins out of control like a disrupted cog wheel while the lives, actions, and motivations of it’s denizens collide and correlate to the state of despair. Technological tentacles are wiping the minds of the people and a chaotic carnival of flickering anti-social encompassment is breaching the collective unconscious. Heroes perpetually arise to combat humankinds annihilation yet they are, at best, only able to maintain a teetering balance. These crazy street art paintings were all made start to finish, live in front of audiences, without the safety of preliminary sketches nor corrections. I would always improvise the artworks and gather inspiration from the crowds and happenings on the surrounding walkways. This free-form approach to painting was particularly exciting as people could interact, give input and either directly or indirectly change the direction of the drawings.

As part of my experimentations as a street performer I quickly discovered the capacity in which the act of creation can captivate a crowd. People have a real interest in watching other people, whether in be a decorated parade, a butcher in the window or a crazy guy drawing giant pictures in the middle of downtown Toronto. I first noticed the bewildering effects of public performance when I began doodling to pass time at exhibitions and conventions. Intrigued with the process’s ability to communicate I began exploring the medium more and more while working in public venues. I started with poster sized paintings on Queen West and steadily increased the size and intricacy of the artworks at events such as the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition and P.S. Kensington’s Car Free Sundays. By 2007 I was able to create detailed live 10 x 10 foot ink murals in under three hours. I completed 27 giant paintings, one every Saturday and at numerous special events, throughout the entire 2007 season. The enitre installation of these drawings was exhibited at the Resistor Gallery that same Dec.
