HEY APATHY! INK DRAWINGS & INVESTIGATIONS
Alternative Comics and Canadian Art!HEY APATHY! is an ongoing artistic investigation into the monstrous metropolis. I began this extensive series of Canadian pen and ink artworks in Dec. 2001. In the initial drawings the city is announced as an ominous gear propelled by an endless sea of faceless denizens. At that time I was working out of the seclusion of my parents suburban basement studio and envisioned the urban atrocities as a nihilistic conglomeration of misdirected commercial and superficial ideologies. Upon completion of this first installation I recall pointing to one of the 10 x 15 foot murals and declaring “Someday I will be able draw this same picture but with all of the blanks faces filled in.” In order to better understand the phenomena in question I hypothesized an unconventional interview through which a series of public interactions, experiments and exhibitions would assist in my research. Since that time I have executed this “interview” by means of a increasingly intricate and progressively public artist’s process including gallery showings, public festivals, public murals and street art performances. As I became more familiar with the city so to did the mythology.
One of the most unique aspect of the HEY APATHY! project has been the simultaneous and perpetual development of both the artworks and myself. With each new body of works I decidedly changed not only my drawing techniques, but the location of my processes. As a major component of my epistemological anthropology, I made conscious efforts to research and develop my illustrations in the public forum. At first in was in cafes, then bars, followed by gallery presentations, public exhibitions, and cumulating in live street art performances. This process permitted me to engage in conversations with thousands of people from all over the globe and of all walks of life. Having learned many things about architecture and others, the drawings still represent the city as a giant gear, only now it is all the unique individuals, not faceless cogs, who fuel the machine!
HEY APATHY! VOLUME ONE catalogues the first 13 chapters of my Canadian Art investigative ink study. Like a subliminally alternative comic book the collection unconsciously reveals the indescribable findings of this seven year experiment. With each new chapter I explore various technical approaches, styles , including ambidextrous drawing, animated film shorts, published works and live paintings, constantly reconstructing both my artistic vision and ideological interpretations of the monstrous metropolis. Follow the illustrated innovations, mythological discoveries and personal experiences from my weird and superfluous quest. “WHAT IS THIS CITY?“, “WHO ARE ALL THESE PEOPLE”, and “HOW DO I FIT IN” Each chapter includes artist’s statements, exhibition photos, comics, and animations (if applicable) Welcome to the City of Gears!
